The World Central Kitchen Devotes Efforts to Food Sovereignty in Puerto Rico
Last week we introduced you to our Idea Lab series, which will be focusing on topics surrounding Puerto Rico in conjunction with the upcoming production of Recent Alien Abductions. Through Idea Lab, we will delve into the roots of Puerto Rico’s debt crisis, it’s colonial history with the U.S. and the ways in which the debt crisis is engendering new approaches. We’ll be talking more about these issues in the coming weeks, but if you want to see how organizations are grappling with these historical challenges and reimagining a debtless future, check out this article on World Central Kitchen and its new “Plow to Plate” Puerto Rico initiative. Founded by James Beard Award-winning chef José Andrés, World Central Kitchen is developing partnerships with and investing in small farms and local food businesses in Puerto Rico to help build the country’s agricultural economy and infrastructure beyond what existed even before the arrival of Hurricane Maria.
