Support PlayCo 24/7 by
Join PlayCo in celebrating another year around the sun in the city that never sleeps! Continuing our tradition of signature premiere productions, commissions, residencies, and innovative, accessible programs that hold our local communities at the center, our unwavering commitment to broadening the horizons of New York audiences, and being an artistic home for hundreds of theatremakers worldwide... these are the reasons we’re calling this fundraising campaign PlayCo 24/7.
Help us welcome artists and audiences into “collective effervescence” by providing shared opportunities to develop and share adventurous live theatre experiences, rest and reflect, connect and collaborate. Together, we expand the possibilities of what it means to be a local and global arts community.
Bangalore to Paris, Barcelona, San Francisco, New York, Singapore, and beyond – these are just some of the places that have impacted our menu of global programming this past year. When it comes to introducing our audiences to the world’s most vital theatrical voices, you can be sure there’s no timezone too great to cross, and no street address too close to home!
Where will we go next?

PlayCo is teaming up with South African theatre artists Keenan Tyler Oliphant and Jo Evans to produce a reading and inter-generational discussion of Survival, a politically searing and comically irreverent 1976 play by Workshop71 about the carceral nature of life in apartheid South Africa, and the collective spirit of survival shared amongst the oppressed.
Devised by the company in a highly physical, experimental style under conditions of radical uncertainty and repression, Survival launched amidst the 1976 student uprising in Soweto. This was followed by an explosive California tour which led the cast into exile in the U.S., and a revival in 1990 on the night of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. The discussion and reading will feature Fana Kekana and Seth Sibanda, two of the work's original creators, who have lived in the U.S. since 1977 when they were exiled from South Africa due to the political content of "Survival."
This event is an opportunity to share this incredible play with a new generation; explore the interconnections between South Africa and the U.S., the radical 70's and the troubled present; and honor the remarkable lives and artistic contributions of Seth Sibanda and Fana Kekana.
Alongside the reading, we are raising funds to:
1. Cover the costs of filming the reading so that future generations can have access to this groundbreaking work.
2. Cover the costs of community events that will bring together the South African community living in NYC with Harlemites and our PlayCo audiences in discussions over food and music.
